Plants aren’t the only life forms in our lawns. Lawns are also host to insects that feed on the stems, leaves, and roots of lawns. Every lawn has insects, but not every lawn is affected by insects. In fact, some insects are beneficial to lawns. However, some insects can damage and even destroy lawns if the conditions are right. The number one deterrent to lawn destroying insects is the health of your lawn. If your lawn is well watered and healthy, it has the ability to combat problem insects and repair itself quickly. Many times damage from underwatering a lawn is mistaken for insect damage. One way you can determine if you have had insect damage is to pull on the brown area of the lawn and see if the grass pulls up easily. If it is easy to pull up large sections of grass similar to pulling up a carpet, insects may have eaten away at the roots of the grass stems leaving the grass unable to get enough water to the stems turning them brown.
